Law on renewable energy sources
Law on Renewable Energy Sources
Kosovo is a potential candidate for EU accession and a member of Energy Community Treaty. In the future, Kosovo will be bound by common targets to generate a defined share of its energy from renewable sources, to comply with the greenhouse gas emissions targets, and to adhere to other policies from the EU Energy Acquis.
The EU is undergoing a clean energy revolution, setting ambitious RES goals by 2030 and full de-carbonization of the energy sector by 2050. Growing the share of energy from renewable sources is causing a paradigm shift in policies, regulations, and the electricity market model in Europe and beyond.
Kosovo has pledged to work together with the EU to mainstream a strict climate policy and to reform the energy and transport sectors to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The new Law on Renewable Energy Sources is expected to be in force by the end of 2023, and will open the door to commence a broader auction or competitive processes scheme for new RES capacities.
The Law will combine best international RES practices and ensure that the necessary legal and regulatory framework is in place to attract energy market investors and achieve Kosovo’s decarbonization goals.
